Australian Stayman

Australian Stayman (AS) is a variation on the Standard American Stayman convention that is more efficient and can convey more information in one response bid. The AS responder, in this case the opener, must alert the responses since they differ in meaning from Standard American Stayman.

Competitive Bidding

Competitive bidding is when the opponents open the bidding. Right away you know where 12+ points reside. That leaves around 28- points for the rest of the table. Under normal random distribution, that means you and your partner have around 18 points between you. Normally not enough for a game, so if your partnership is to get anything normally, it will be a part score. However, miracles do happen.

Interference

Bidding interference by the opponents is a fact of life in bridge. This bidding system attempts to cope with it by providing methods to continue the partnership conversation.

1NT opening

We have discussed interference bidding already for the 1NT opening bid, but we will repeat it here. There are probably 100 conventions used to bid against an opening 1NT, most based on distribution and meant to cope with a strong NT.

The 2C, 2D opening bids

The 2C opening bid

This is one of the bids that is a radical departure from Standard American. Since the 1C bid is reserved for strong hands we need another bid to show a hand with a club suit.

If the opener’s hand contains 5C but is otherwise balanced, then opener bids 1NT.

Slam Bidding

Slam bidding, while glamorous, is overrated. While some double-dummy studies have shown that slams can occur as much as 16% of the time, many are not detectable/biddable. Practical small slams probably occur about 5% of the time, practical grand slams <1% of the time, and bidding system limitations prevent bidding them probably 50% of the time. Other studies have shown that of those slams bid, only about 50% are made.

LD Precision Club Bidding System

Introduction

This is a description of the LD Precision Club Bidding System.

The LD Precision Club Bidding System (“Bidding System”) is an evolution of the Wei Precision Club Bidding System.

The distinguishing features of the Bidding System are a strong 1C opening bid (16+ HCP) and a Weak NT opening bid (11-15 HCP), 5 card major opening bids (11-15 HCP), and a natural 4+ card 1D opening bid.

1D/1H/1S Opening Bids

These bids all indicate 11-15 HCP. 1D indicates 4+D. 1H/1S indicate 5+ cards in the suit (5+M).

In the Basic version of the Bidding System we use the same response patterns that you would use in Standard American or 2/1, adjusted for the fact that the opening bid has a limited range.

Strong Bids

In this Bidding System there are 2 strong bids: 2NT and 1C. The 2NT bid handles a specific strong hand pattern and 1C handles all of the other strong hands.

2NT: 22-24 HCP, balanced

The 2NT handles this specific pattern. As you will see later, other ranges of HCP and balanced hands are handled via an opening 1C and a rebid of NT. Responses to 2NT follow the same pattern as other NT type hands.

Transfer Lebensohl is a complex convention designed to cope with overcalls of a 1NT open or the open of a weak 2 by the opponents. The convention attempts to communicate several things at once:

Weak Bids

If you have <10 HCP but have a long (6+) card suit, you may be able to open the bidding with a preemptive bid.

2H, 2S ; 6-10 HCP, 6+ cards in suit, 2 of top 5 honors.

This is the standard weak 2 bid of Standard American. It is semi-constructive and somewhat disciplined. Opener is not expected to bid again unless requested to by responder. Some players will rebid their suit with a 7 card suit but in my opinion that is a mistake. If the suit was good enough to rebid then the hand…
